Leading an active lifestyle, especially after retirement, appears to be one of the most important things one can do to keep an emotionally positive attitude, maintain good healthy and fight against Alzheimer’s disease. “We have a social idea of what retirement consists of and we need to re-examine that idea. The logical extension of the data we have on dementia is that a person who is still capable of working, who is mentally stimulated with a strong sense of purpose, is better off from the cognitive point of view continuing to engage in that position” says Dr. Jeffery Cummings award winner of the American Association of Geriatric Psychiatry.
At MLP Residence, we strongly encourage regular physical and mental activities for all our residents. Our monthly social calendar hosts activities – both indoors and outdoors – that offer varying options to each resident. From crafts and card nights, from euchre to bingo, from outdoor excursions to BBQ’s, from musical performances to theatre - by staying active we improve chances of avoiding, or at least postponing, cognitive impairment. The ways to stay active are as limitless as your imagination. What is important is that each individual maintains varying exposure to different activities - whether through hobbies or social contribution.
