PLANLESS HOUSE

continued

Finally there are a number of Service event modules: A kitchen module accommodating the 4 phases: storage, preparation technology, presentation and cleaning. A bathroom module accommodating 4 phases: water storage/recycling, health information, repair and sensuality. These modules are nomadic and can add value to any area within the house as required. A Home office program and territory is collated from an intersection of various physical and digital resources within the house as required. The house is proposed as a kind of spatial computer. The program spaces or territories can be thought of as World Lines, trajectories through space-time. This way the house is literally software. The World Lines establish at any point in time the extent of each program space or territory. The state of the house as computer at any time is represented by the combined state of all these program territories.

The wand and wandering
The specificity of the house is defined by its location and the wanderings of the occupants through the cityscape and beyond, their experiences and memories and by the digitally mediated modes of internal transformation and connection possible through remote control tools within the house: wands. By wandering the city becomes home, a living room, an intimate field moving from a topological experience to a toponymic one, a field of known histories, associations and memories and a domestic field. One knows how to find the best coffee, cakes, smells, places of memory, places of comfort, places to read and catch the sun, Foxtel coverage, satellite paths, places of safety, city surveillance cameras, places for art, shopping, social places, places to watch people, places to play, run, exercise, places to reach local beaches by particular trams and places that act as vague references to the cities and locations of one's childhood. The house is now a zone celebrating these unique frames of reference, populated with art, game boy scores, trophies, memorabilia, rock collections, and a place to develop identity. It is a site of continuous change, constant production, a functional instability but a programmatic stability deriving value from identity and memory.
