What are Operations Jobs?

In Operations Jobs, an operation manager is someone who is in charge of day-to-day operations at a store or a business. The operations manager can be similar to a general manager. The main focus in Operations jobs is on getting the business to run smoothly as a single unit.

Operation managers are focused solely with big picture issues, and are worried about budgets and efficiency. Their goal is to streamline the company so it is as effective as it can possibly be.

Employees in Operations Jobs are required to understand at least some part of every facet of the business - so he or she must grasp accounting, sales, supply, delivery, customer service, etc

Tasks for Operations Jobs include:

  • Formulating policies, managing daily operations, and planning the use of materials and human resources
  • Motivating employees to utilise their ability to the maximum potential for the benefit of the business
  • In Operations jobs, the Operations Manager is concerned with quality control and they make sure that any and all of their clients are pleased with the product they get.
  • Dealing with the recruitment needs of the organisation.
  • Liaise with human resources to make sure that the work environment is friendly.
  • Act as spokesperson for the branch of the company in the press and corporate meetings with executives.
  • Serve as the middlemen between the executives and the employees, making sure the messages and goals of the executives are transmitted to the workers, and that the complaints or suggestions of the workers are made clear to the executives. 
  • Serve as an advisory to the executives over what the reality is and how it may or may not differ from their vision.
  • Management of the budget.
  • Management of stock levels for day to day operation of the business

Skills and Personal Qualities required in Operations Jobs:

  • Strong financial understanding – Profit & Loss and experience of current legislation 
  • Good communication and management skills.
  • Qualified to degree level or appropriate in a related technical discipline
  • Good communication skills
  • Highly computer literate
  • Confident, outgoing, comfortable dealing with customers both on the telephone and face to face

Qualifications

Since this is a management job, some post-secondary education is usually necessary.  The job is upwardly mobile, but it is not just handed out to anyone.  An Operations Manager needs to be a natural leader and needs to be able to maximise efficiency and get a message across to their employees as effectively as possible.  They also need to be good listeners and hard workers.  As far as the type of degrees operations managers would generally need to have, it depends on the field, but generally, a solid background in finance, business, or accounting would be a good call. 

Career Path

Typically, in Operations jobs, employees will start at an analyst level and then take on increased responsibilities and concentrate on specialist or management roles.

Ultimately, in Operations jobs, professionals can progress to some of the most senior levels in a business and play a vital and influential role in steering the direction of the business, and the way its services are delivered.

Salary

Starting salary for Operations jobs can be anywhere from £20,000 to £30,000, with pay increasing along with number of years service.  In a large company or PLC environment, it is highly likely that an Operations Manager can make £60,000 a year, with Director posts commanding anything from £60,000 upwards.
