Step 1: Do I need planning permission for my home conversion?

Converting your loft or garage, using the existing roof line and structure of the building, doesn't normally need planning permission. However building regulations will need to be applied for and a full set of architectural drawings and structural calculations would be essential.

If your home conversion requires any structural work involving the roof or moving wall boundaries, then planning permission may be required to proceed with your home conversion.

Your home is awarded a certain amount of area in cubic meters to extend your living space before planning permission will be needed; this varies depending on the size of your home. This is also dependant on what area your home is located, as many council planning departments have different guidelines. It is always best to check with your local planning authority for clarification (if you need help with planning, this can be arranged).
